Johannesburg Water has introduced stringent Level 1 restrictions, to reduce the current demand by at least 15%.
The local water utility, introduced this, while seven of Johannesburg Water’s (JW) reservoirs and towers are under immense pressure.
JW confirmed low pressure and dwindling water levels at the Commando system supplying Brixton and surrounds, the Central system, Sandton, Midrand, Randburg-Roodepoort, Soweto and Southern areas, as well as Deep South.
Affected areas are Crosby, Brixton, Hursthill, Parktown, Berea, Yeoville, Randjieslaagte, Linksfield, Alexander Park systems, Bryanston, Illovo, Morningside, Grand Central, President Park, Erand systems, Honeydew, Cosmo City, Waterval Tower, Power Park, Chiawelo, Meadowlands, Zondi, Crown Gardens, Eagles Nest, Lawley, Ennerdale, Lenasia and Orange Farm systems.
Through tighter restrictions, JW said no irrigation would be allowed from 6am until 6pm, spray nozzles for hosepipes will be compulsory.
The irrigation of gardens at parks and all the City’s entities will be stopped.
JW also said the Johannesburg Road Agency’s (JRA contractors) would stop using drinking water for construction work and use effluent from six water treatment works.
If all the immediate interventions fail, the JW said it would not hesitate to introduce Level 2 restrictions.
