The deadline for the renewal of South Africa’s duty-free access looms, under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly written to South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, to notify him of his intent to revoke the agreement.
Trump said according to sections 104 of AGOA, South Africa failed to “remove trade barriers, including U.S. agricultural access and intellectual property concerns.”
He also expressed concerns of insufficient efforts in fighting corruption and bribery, despite ongoing law enforcement efforts in South Africa, as well as commissions and institutions to tackle corruption.
Trump lost a “midterm” election, to review his 2-year term, as President.
These elections are held in the “middle of the 4-year term.”
Democratic candidates won races in Republican strongholds, such as Kansas, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas.
