A 27-year old man was arrested in Voëlklip, Hermanus, for abalone poaching.
The man was arrested travelling with a CEM registration, transporting 1,560 abalone. The weight of the shucked abalone is estimated at 187.9 kilograms.
Its total cost is R466 300, according to members of the Overstrand Municipality’s Task Team.
A statement from the Overstrand Municipality said the arrest happened on the 29th May 2024, at about 22:00.
Task Team officers were conducting crime prevention patrols in Hermanus when they spotted a suspicious vehicle speeding on the R43 / 7th Street in Voëlklip.
The driver was arrested, and the vehicle carrying abalone was confiscated and handed over to the Hermanus Police.
