The Kuilsrivier Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit in conjunction with Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental Investigation Unit, arrested two suspects for abalone poaching on Wednesday, one Zimbabwean national, aged 38 and a Malawian  national (34), on Wednesday, 13 November 2024, for the possession of abalone.

The police (SAPS) said they received information of a truck that is loaded with abalone, heading to Gauteng.

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said “the members operationalized the information and found the identified truck in the Wellington industrial area. The truck was searched and abalone found in black bags weighing  567.40 kilogram.”

More investigations led the police to a Volkswagen Caddy, where abalone was found, weighing at 463,89 kilogram in the vehicle.

The estimated street value of the abalone is R7 million.

The suspects are due to appear in the Wellington Magistrates’ court on Friday, 15 November 2024, on the mentioned charges.
