The Gauteng Government plans to support over 300 Buy-back centres and cooperatives to promote waste diversion and sustainability.
This emerged at the Industrial Symbiosis Symposium, held at the CSIR in Pretoria, with a focus on accelerating green jobs and the Green Economy.
Key discussions centered around Sustainable Waste Management, the Circular Economy, exploring policy frameworks like extended producer responsibility, waste recycling and product reuse.
South Africa’s economic hub, presented its approach to enabling the waste economy despite challenges like high waste generation, limited landfill space and slow recycling momentum.
Other Provinces also tabled ways to tackle environmental challenges, including Limpopo, Free State and Mpumalanga.
The symposium also emphasized the need for cooperation between the public and private sectors.
