4 people lost their lives in Mtubatuba as a result of thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds over the weekend.

A statement from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Disaster Management, said the storm tore roofs off houses and caused damage to infrastructure, including power cables, roads, bridges, and vehicles.

About 70 houses were destroyed in Somkhele and KwaMyeki areas.

Community halls and churches have opened their doors to the public, while others have sought alternative accommodation with relatives.

Damaged infrastructure includes Eskom poles, cables, roads, properties and cars.

No fatalities were reported in the Harry Gwala District, in the Greater Kokstad Municipality, during the weekend’s experienced heavy rains and a hailstorm.

Six (6) households were affected.

23 houses were affected in the Rosetta Informal settlement.

Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, said “we are collaborating with other government departments, such as social development and human settlement, to aid all victims.”

She also said teams, in conjunction with municipalities, will persist in assessments to determine necessary government intervention.
