Researchers at the Water Research Commission (WRC) have found a way to connect interrelated resources such as water, energy and food.
“The water-energy-food (WEF) nexus outlook acknowledges the inextricable links between WEF resources to maximize and minimize their synergies and trade-offs” according to the WRC.
A statement released yesterday on social media platforms, suggests the nexus outlook considers all resources (water, energy, food and land) are under pressure from changes in climate and socioeconomic conditions. This short-term project was part of the WRC’s goal to promote the WEF nexus research and implementation in South Africa.
The outcome of the study is a web-based and GIS-enabled integrative nexus analytic model, iWEF. This model will reveal where resources are located, bridging the gap for better accessibility of tools. It provides an accurately computed and visual account of resources that are available, distribution, and use. This is useful for planning and decision making.
