The Darling Biodiversity Conservation Park was launched last week Tuesday, by the Botanical Society (BotSoc) and its partners.

This is the the first of 15 planned biodiversity conservation gardens, as part of Protecting and Restoring South Africa’s Natural Heritage project, funded by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) and the SA National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).

BotSoc thanked the Vila Environmental Services, Swartland Municipality and the Darling Wildflower Society (DWFS) as well as the Green Fingers local gardening group of Darling.

Information about the Cape Floristic Region biodiversity hotspots and the fynbos biome, as well as the Renosterveld of the Swartland region, is displayed on boards around the garden.

BotSoc said “we believe that when people fall in love with plants, they’re more likely to protect them — and we hope this garden inspires exactly that.”
