One person has died and two injured, following a clash between taxi drivers and those of ehailing services- bolt and uber, on Wednesday, the 13th August 2025.

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) said e-hailing services are operating without government permits, placing commuters at risk.

The two organisations met several times, including with the then Johannesburg MMC for transport – Kenny Kunene and the South African Police Service.

The meetings were to address the clash between the two, since early June, at Maponya Mall, Soweto.

This morning, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, strongly condemned the violent incident at Maponya Mall, describing them as senseless, unacceptable, and a direct threat to the safety and stability of the public transport system.

In addition, she has called on law enforcement agencies to prioritize the investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.

She further urged both taxi associations and e-hailing operators to resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue, facilitated by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport .
