Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, the Executive Mayor of Tembisa, has suspended the Fixed Charge Tariff this week, following protest action by residents on Monday.

Xhakaza said his decision, still subject to endorsement by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipal Council, has considered present circumstances.

“The decision, will enable comprehensive, inclusive, and orderly engagement with affected communities. Ensure that legitimate concerns raised by residents are systematically and effectively addressed” he said.

The municipal administration is reportedly implementing the suspension on the billing system.

The recent reviewed tariff structure was introduced by the energy regulator (NERSA), as part of standard regulatory processes, aimed at ensuring adequate investment in infrastructure maintenance, long-term sustainability of electricity supply and equitable distribution of operational costs, across all communities.

“The City calls upon all residents to remain calm, exercise restraint, and participate constructively and peacefully in the forthcoming consultative processes.”
