Andile Mngwevu, the City of Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport Management, is missing in Mozambique, following suspicions his car might have been swept away by floodwaters.
He was travelling with five other people.
Mngwevu’s spouse arrived in Mozambique on Saturday, following work of the South African Rescue Mission to Mozambique, to try find the MMC.
The City of Ekurhuleni could only confirm information received through official diplomatic and security channels, including that he was travelling to the Chokwé area in Mozambique, when he went missing.
The Rescue Mission got hold of one of the five people who were with him.
National authorities are also exploring additional support mechanisms, including security and evacuation assistance, as further information becomes available, through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
The City has urged the public to give the Mngwevu family privacy and space, during this time.
