About 93357 Megawatts are planned for installation, exceeding the contracted amount of 66507 Megawatts to supply the grid by 2028. This according to Ronald Marais, who spoke to media and stakeholders at a feedback session about the SA Renewable Energy grid survey, by Eskom, SAPVIA and SAWEA in June 2023.
The size of plants for photovoltaic is expected to be 34503, wind 30044, battery storage at 26745 and gas at 2065.
Wind energy dominates the implementation of renewable energy at 21114 MW, PV battery storage at 19 572 MW, and PV at 13305. The most contracted wind will be in the year 2027 at 8160 MW. The least amount contracted and installed is at 496 MW in 2024.
The most wind projects will be implemented in the Western Cape (1593), Northern Cape (300), Eastern Cape (1016) and KZN.
The survey found most renewable energy projects will be implemented in the Northern Cape (5821), followed by the Western Cape (5349), North West (4698), Hydra Central (3506) and the Free State (2470). Gauteng has the least amount contracted (360).
