The Cape Winelands District Municipality confirmed a fire on the Paarl Mountain, on Sunday midday.

The Municipality said firefighting vehicles with crew, ground teams and aerial resources were deployed.

The Drakenstein Municipality requested visitors to the mountain, to vacate the area.

This is ahead of a heat wave forecast by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Meteorologists Wayne Venter and Mathebula Langutelani, said heatwaves will persist over the Western and Norther Cape from Monday until Friday.

This is caused by “ a strong, slow-moving high pressure system, in the upper levels of the atmosphere.”

They also said the systems sink and warms as it descends, resulting in higher temperatures on the surface.
