A structural fire at Gemsbok Street, Chicago, in Paarl, on Saturday, 31 January 2026, had residents on edge, following several recent fires in Paarl and surrounding areas.
But the Drakenstein Municipalityโs Fire and Rescue Services, said its team acted swiftly to manage the scene. Soon the blaze was brought under control and successfully extinguished.
The Municipality also said an initial assessment shows that three to four flats were affected.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Ramaphosa Informal Settlement, Ekurhuleni
Firefighters are battling a fire that broke out around 12:27 on Saturday, at a building material warehouse in Ramaphosa Informal Settlement in Boksburg.
The Ekurhuleni Emergency Management Service (EMS) confirmed there were no casualties reported.
The fire is threatening informal homes.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
The fire did not stop the Gift of the Givers from donating containerised public sanitation facilities to the community.
The organisation said โthe project brings safe hygiene to an area long without basic services. The milestone was marked by the handover of the 100th home built in the settlement, along with food hampers and care packs for families. This initiative reaffirms that access to sanitation is a right – not a privilege.โ

A fire that broke out at an Industrial area, on Thursday, at a factory on Royston Road near Sobantu on Thursday evening, is being investigated.
The fire burnt two shops, a factory that produces nappies and Letโs Shop SA (specialising in kitchenware).
No casualties were reported, but some residents shared pictures of smoke plumes heading for the the skies.
