The Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve is closed until further notice, following a fire in Cederberg, that has burnt an estimated 24,000 hectares.

Firefighters are battling four fires in the area.

Cape Nature said in a statement on Monday, crews have contained three.

“We currently have six ‘Working on Fire’ teams on the ground, three day teams and three night teams, and aircraft will be deployed for the day” said Cape Nature.

Sructures were burnt down but assessments are underway to determine the extent of the damage.

Visitors and guests to the reserve had to be evacuated from the area.

Last week the Cederberg Municipality said firefighters were in the mountainous Algeria area and near Eselbank.
