Floods on Bird Island washed away nests, leaving chicks without shelter, on Tuesday.
The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) said in an update, its teams collected 46 chicks without shelter or parents.
They were relocated to the facility in Gqeberha, for “round-the-clock care, including warmth, specialised feeding, health checks, and close monitoring.”
SANCCOB also explained that seabird chicks need safe nesting sites, otherwise, there would be a drop in breeding success.
“Rehabilitation gives these chicks a second chance, while protecting their breeding habitats secures their future.”
The rescue team was made up of SANCCOB Seabird Monitors, SANParks Field Rangers, and Robbie, who assisted with boat transport to Bird Island using his vessel Stampede.
