The Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) has returned the 150- year old cross to church ruins at St Peter’s Rainbow Village.

The cross was removed during the redevelopment of the church, but there are plans to develop a memorial precinct.

Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism first made plans of such a facility public, back in 2022.

Once completed, people will be able to add painted rocks to heal past wounds, through a “stone garden” area.

St Marks and St John’s Church as well as the MBDA, are custodians of the project.

The MBDA said in a statement on Friday, “the return of the cross, marks the restoration of a symbol that once stood at the heart of South End’s spiritual and community life.”

The MBDA also committed to providing a new cross for the Church, ensuring that both sites are respected and honoured.

Community engagement is expected to take place through upcoming activities at St Peter’s Rainbow Village, designed to reconnect people with the site’s history and significance.
