Water levels in the Vaal decreased to an extent, that graves resurfaced.

There has been general concern about the level of water in the Vaal, until the Department of Water and Sanitation intervened.

Water will get released from the Sterkfontein Dam to augment the Vaal, when the latter reaches about 18%.

The Department’s Livhuwani Mabuda, Acting Deputy Director General for Infrastructure Management, said in a notice to residents in the area, the Vaal Dam has been dropping at a rate between 1,5 to 2% a week, and is expected to reach 18% by the 23rd December 2024.

Water levels in the channel are expected to rise during the release of water.
As a result, members of the public are advised to avoid low lying bridges.

This movement of water is expected to mostly affect water users and residents along the Wolfe River and Nuwejaarspruit.
