Vikesh Rajpaul of Eskom shared a slide summing up the repurposing of the Komati Power Station, at a site visit organized by the Presidential Climate Commission on the 07th July 2023.
The Komati power station commissioned in 1961, is one of Eskom’s old fleet to be repurposed to cleaner energy as part of the Just Transition process.
Speaking at the event, Bheki Nxumalo, a Senior Executive at Eskom, said the Just Transition process, has reinvigorated hope into that station and community. In 2022, the station was no longer economical and as a result due to close.
“But what we call the second phase of transition has brought hope.” He said labour movements, concerned about the loss of jobs in that Region, have echoed their relief “we will not be left stranded again.”
Komati is expected to deliver 150MW solar PV, 150 MW battery storage, 70 MW wind and 3 synchronous condensers.
