Last week’s rain storm, from the 3rd and 5th of June 2026, in the Garden Route, further delayed efforts to reopen main tourism routes, such as the R328 (Cango Caves Road).

The road was closed due to rockfalls, during the first batch of heavy rains, earlier in May.

Tertuis Simmers, the MEC of Infrastructure in the Western Cape, said “unfortunately, the intensity of the storm resulted in additional erosion and damage to some of the preliminary stabilisation works. This setback highlights the ongoing challenges posed by the series of extreme weather events experienced across the Western Cape since early May.”

Simmers also said specialist geotechnical teams returned to the site on Monday, this week, to resume work of stabilising the slope.

He also could not confirm when the road will be reopened.

Similarly, sections of Main Road 363 via Buffelskoof and Main Road 369 via the Swartberg Pass, experienced flood-related damage, including wash-aways and high river flows.

Emergency repair teams are also currently restoring these routes.
