A Sergeant attached to Border Policing, who went missing in the mountains near Vioolsdrift in the Northern Cape on Friday, 26 December 2025, was found unharmed, on Sunday morning.

The Sergeant, went missing on his return home from a hike in the mountains, with two other colleagues.

The colleagues reportedly found their way back on time, but he lagged behind.

The police said in a statement, the incident was reported at approximately 22:00 and a search operation began immediately.

But due to darkness and the hazardous terrain, the search was suspended late last night and resumed early on Sunday morning.

During the night, the missing man called his wife, informing her that he was safe and decided to remain in the mountains overnight, to avoid further disorientation or injury.

Police said various partners joined in the search for the Sergeant, including the Air Wing from Gauteng, the Western Cape, and the Northern Cape, SAPS Border Policing, local SAPS members, Springbok K9 Unit, Search and Rescue teams, members of the public from Springbok Search and Rescue, medical services from Springbok and Upington, the local community, TransEx Chopper Services, and local emergency services.
