The firefighting teams, assisted by cooler nighttime temperatures, were able to contain the fire running parallel to the road.
The fire line that ran above the old tollhouse has crossed over the peak of the mountain, onto the Tulbagh side.
The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services said its teams continue to extinguish the fire, alongside partners (NCC Wildfires Winelands Fire Protection Association Lewis Bush Clearing and Alien Firefighting) and CapeNature.
Teams have reported that there is dense mist over the top of the mountain this morning, making evaluation difficult.
The fire line on the left flank of the mountain moved toward an aged protea plantation, situated between two rivers.
Teams are hopeful that the line will burn itself out when reaching the rivers but continue to work the fire line.
The weather is predicted to be slightly cooler than yesterday’s 35° C; however, fire crews and vehicles from CWDM, together with contracted ground crews, will still have their hands full with active firefighting activities in difficult terrain.
