Severe thunderstorms caused extensive damage in Zululand, uMzinyathi and uThukela districts earlier in January 2025.

The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC, Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi, is expected to visit affected areas in Vryheid, where homes, roads and bridges were destroyed.

Disaster management teams are expected to start providing relief aid and rebuilding.

The MEC’s scheduled visit is for Monday, 3 February 2025.

Earlier in January, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma visited roads destroyed by floods in KwaMakhutha,  KwaNgcolosi and Hillcrest.

He also visited Vryheid, Empangeni, Melmoth and other areas.

“The focus is on ensuring that we accelerate our responses. Despite limited resources caused by recurring heavy rainfall and floods, we want to be closer to communities during this period of need” Duma said at the time.
