Mteto Nyati’s term as Board Chairman of Eskom, was extended for three years, starting from the 1st of November this year.
Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy, announced the extension at a media briefing on Friday.
Eskom said it welcomes the decision, which is expected to provide continuity of governance and strategic oversight.
Dan Marokane, Group Chief Executive of Eskom, said “under Mr Nyati’s leadership, the Board has overseen a period of significant operational, financial and governance progress, while holding the dual mandate of a commercial duty to run a financially sound business, and a developmental duty to keep South Africa connected, growing and inclusive.”
He also said the Board has also overseen significant progress in Eskom’s separation, including the advancement of the unbundling strategy, the establishment and operationalisation of the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), and the launch of Eskom Green, the utility-scale renewable energy business.
Metro himself said “I look forward to continuing this work with my colleagues on the Board whose experience, wisdom and commitment have already done a great deal for this organisation. We must now help our country industrialise and help the Southern African Development Community region industrialise. Eskom must be more than a supplier of power. It must be a platform for growth.”
