Nkosinathi Emmanuel “Nathi” Mthethwa, South Africa’s ambassador to France, was found dead on September 30, 2025, at the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile.

There are mixed reports surrounding his death, French- based reporters said he jumped from the 22nd floor of the Hotel, while the Paris Prosecutor’s office, said a window in his room was found forced open.

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed sadness at the passing of Mthethwa, South Africa’s Head of Mission in Paris, who died at the age of 58.

“The untimely passing of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa, is a moment of deep grief in which Government and citizens stand beside the Mthethwa family. Ambassador Mthethwa has served our nation in diverse capacities during a lifetime that has ended prematurely and traumatically” said Ramaphosa.

Mthethwa has held several positions in Government, for 15 years, as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture; and Police.
