A truck en route to picking up a citrus load at a local farm, was trapped at a low lying bridge near the Gamtoos River.

A 30-year old driver was rescued from the truck.

The river was swollen following recent heavy rains but the bridge in question was badly affected by May’s heavy rains.

Louwrens Bezuidenhout, NSRI St Francis Bay deputy station commander, said a local farmer made a call to the NSRI when he saw the truck he was awaiting in water.

NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) and NSRI Jeffreys Bay duty crew, the stations at Gqeberha, were activated to assist, as well as the police, the Eastern Cape Department of Health, EMS rescue squad, Water Policing and Diving Service and Smart Security.

They established a technical rope pulley system and anchor ropes, to pull off a technical rescue operation, which lasted for 3 hours.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
