Beach goers are asked to be on the lookout for any stranded or oiled African penguins along Silversand Beach, part of Betty’s Bay.
This after concerned residents alerted the Overstrand Municipality to oil patches, in the area.
The Municipality’s Dean O’Neill, said in a statement, CapeNature was notified, in accordance with the Oil Spill Response Plan for the area.
O’Neill also said Spill Tech will be cleaning up.
The source of the oil is unknown, but it is suspected that it might have originated from illegal tank washing at sea or from a leaking shipwreck.
Important numbers: If you encounter a penguin in distress, whether oiled, injured, or unusually still, please contact SANCCOB on 078 638 3731 or the APPS Rescue Line on 072 598 7117.
