Pick n Pay has begun the process of retrenching 22,000 workers, after the company launched a Section 189 notice, earlier on in May.

The Section 189 notice of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995, allows employees to dismiss employees based on  operational requirements.

Nomakhosazana Meth, the Minister of Labour, intervened by getting Pick n Pay and labour unions (Cosatu and Saccawu), to return to the bargaining table.

Meth said talks are at a highly delicate stage, with the CCMA process halted.
