The City of Johannesburg’s 10 – point plan to secure 500 Megawatts of electricity by 2030, was tabled at a media briefing this morning by Environment and Infrastructure Services MMC: Cllr. Jack Sekwaila. The summarized plan includes the following :
#The introduction of the short-term power programme, to procure in excess of 1Megawatt and above from Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
#About 4 bids were successful from 16 received. They will yield Waste to energy (20MW), Gas to Power (31 MW), Photovoltaic (40.8MW).
2 of the 4 service providers are within the City.
#Rooftop solar projects in less affluent areas is underway, with 700 to be installed.
#The Cityroof skyline to form virtual power stations, these are illuminating lights during loadshedding placed for security reasons. About 45 were installed in Soweto, Diepkloof and Orange Farm.
#Small scale embedded generation, is the deployment of solar high masks, which prolong supply during loadshedding.
#Some 20,000 geyser heating systems installed across the City, 500 more underway.
