Police uncovered an illegal abalone processing activity at a lodge in the Southwell area outside Bathurst.

Three foreign nationals aged between 28 and 45 years were arrested on Wednesday, for the activity, by officials from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DAFF).

DAFF worked closely with the police (SAPS Highway Patrol), the Stock Theft Unit (STU), Vispol Bathurst and other relevant units.

Although investigations continue, the men are facing charges relating to the contravention of the Marine Living Resources Act 18 of 1998.

They are expected to appear before the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 21 August 2026.
