The Department of Labour issued a prohibition notice against the Registry facility, used by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) in the Ekurhuleni South District, this week.
The Public Servants Association (PSA) said it resorted to escalating the condition of the building to the Department of Labour, after it was snubbed by the Gauteng Department of Education.
The building is now closed.
Yolanda Ralawe, Labour Relations Officer at the PSA, said in a statement, recent inspections, found the building was overcrowded, filthy and unsafe.
She said in addition, the building is a fire hazard, full of piles of files, which pose a fire risk.
This is the PSA’s second victory in less than a month, in tackling buildings of concern.
In July, the PSA got employees of the Deeds Office, to relocate from the Marble Towers to a temporary facility.
Sbusiso Ndzala, PSA Provincial Organizer, said the Department of Labour, issued contravention and prohibition notices, against the employer, subsequent to an inspection.
The towers have a broken elevator, poor ventilation, electrical and structural risks.
Ndzala said “a permanent building to house the office is currently under construction, to be completed by September 2026.”
