South Africa has announced plans to  temporarily step back from the G20 during the US Presidency in 2026.

Enoch Godongwana, Minister of Finance, said this move is aimed at easing diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Godongwana said South Africa’s role in BRICS has added to ongoing tensions with the US.

In the next four days, the Democrats are threatening another shutdown, in that country.

There are also reports of Senate Democrats expressing unwilling to fund the Department of Homeland Security reforms and growing concerns about the violence imposed by related specialised police-ICE.

The US Government has shutdown at least 21 times in the last 50 years, thrice during President Donald Trump (2018, 2019 and 2025).
