A school of sardines washed out in large numbers along Nelson Mandela beachfronts and resorts, on Thursday.
The Municipality cautioned against collecting or consuming washed out fish.
This is because the sardines might have been exposed to contaminants for an unknown period of time.
The Municipality’s Sithembiso Soyaya, said in a statement, “until further assessments are completed, the washed up sardines should not be considered safe for human and animal consumption. Members of the public are urged to not consume, sell or distribute the fish.”
The Municipality also urged residents to report new sightings.
Affected areas are currently 1st Beacon, Pollock, Hobie, Humewood and Kings beaches.
Last month, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, said it is investigating the possibility of an algal bloom at various spots where fish kills were found, on the West Coast and in Gansbaai.
