The Western Cape Education Department has announced that schools will be closed in certain areas tomorrow, as storms continue in the Cape.
About 80% of rain is expected tomorrow, this is an estimated equivalent of an additional 40-60mm in some areas.
About 70 neighborhoods across the City were affected by the storms.
All public ordinary and special schools in the following education districts will be closed on Thursday, 11 July 2024:
• Metro Central Education District
• Metro East Education District
• Metro North Education District
• Metro South Education District
• Cape Winelands Education District
• Overberg Education District
• Circuit 1 and 2 of the West Coast Education District (Malmesbury and Picketberg
areas).
In the Cape Winelands District, water levels are also rising, leading to the closure of the following roads :
⛔ Closed: Bo-Dal Road behind Newton. Our Traffic Services are on site
⛔ Closed: Bainskloof Pass. Provincial as well as Drakenstein Municipality Traffic Services on site
⛔ Jan van Riebeeck/Fairview, Paarl: Southbound Lane is flooded. Northbound lanes are still open. Our Traffic Services are on site.
⛔ Van der Stel/Ribbok, Paarl: Water levels are rising. Traffic Services are on site and our Jetvac truck is en route to remove the blockage.
⛔ Please drive with caution on Main Road, Southern and Northern Paarl
Areas of the N2 are flooded, the Theewaterskloof Municipality, has requested motorists to slow down when approaching the Houw Hoek farmstall.
In an update this evening, the Municipality said while all major roads remain open within the Theewaterskloof area, the following roads have been closed or are being closely monitored due to water over the roadway:
1.Nethercourt road to the Oaks has been partially closed.
2. Dassiesfontein road between km 3 and 4 has been closed due to water over the low water bridge.
3. Solitaire to Tesselaarsdal from the Hemel-and-Aarde Road has been closed.
4. Bloemenkraal near Greyton between km 2 and 3 has been closed.
5. Please be cautious between Greyton and Ouplaas due to high water levels at the bridge.
6. Please be cautious between Helderstroom to Middelplaas as well as Uitkyk to Middelplaas due to high water levels next to the river.
7. The Dwaalhoek farm road has also been closed temporarily.
8. The Bredasdorp/Struisbaai (R319) remains closed.
9. The Bredasdorp/Swellendam (MR264) remains closed.
10. Water has risen significantly at Nachtwacht on the Bredasdorp/ Aniston road and might close.
11. Van Der Stel Pass is slippery but can be driven slowly and cautiously.
12. Franschhoek Pass will close at 18:00 tonight.
Another intense cold front is expected to hit the region on Thursday.
