DJ, the 15- year old Loggerhead sea turtle, went as far as the St Lucia region, this week.
Scientists from various institutions who have been part of DJ’s rescue, installed a satellite tag on her, prior to her release.
The tag was sponsored by On Safari Africa and her data is hosted by the University of Pretoria.
She was released about a week ago, and was a stranded hatchling for more than 14 years.
Scientists from the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) said she is already doing what wild loggerhead sea turtles do best, such as travelling up the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.
She has covered more than 250 km, averaging over 30 km per day.
This makes her movements exactly what scientists were hoping to see from a healthy young turtle establishing her ocean range.
