Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) has finalised maintenance work on the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) Tunnel North and Ash River Outfall.
The work began six months ago, on the 1 October 2024, resulting in a temporary closure of the tunnel.
While work on the South African section is now complete, the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority – responsible for the Lesotho side of the mega water project, has requested an extension due to earlier implementation challenges that led to delays.
This means, the full maintenance programme on the LHWP Tunnel North is expected to be completed by the end of April 2025, but it will take a few weeks before water can resume flowing through the LHWP Tunnel.
The delay is not expected to affect water availability in Gauteng negatively.
