Dr. Desbo Mohono, Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, led a tree planting initiative in Ledig, part of the Moses Kotane Municipality, on Friday.

Trees were planted in Mperebere, Itumeleng and Tswaidi Schools.

Similarly Gift Malapane Mathe, of the Soweto Environmental Forum, said 50 trees will be planted in open spaces, churches and schools in Mapetla, Soweto, on Wednesday.

Mathe said the difference between Northern suburbs and Southern townships is the lack of trees.

“As a result, some residential areas are bare, with the sun expected to get even hotter due to climate change, we have partnered with City Parks, to protect the townships.”

Eskom’s team at Ankerlig Power Station,  also  planted indigenous Karee tree on Thursday. This initiative not only supports local biodiversity but also contributes to the Group Chief Executive’s challenge of helping to plant one million trees across South Africa.
