The World Economic Forum (WEF) has called on nations to increase investment in the ocean.
This would fast-track the ocean’s ability to help tackle the climate crisis.
A statement released by the World Economic Forum says the ocean must be looked at differently, this time, for its ability to fight climate change.
The organization claims the ocean has been overlooked.
“New research shows that ocean-based climate solutions can cut annual greenhouse gas emissions much more than previously thought.”
Fresh research commissioned by the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel) shows that ocean-based climate solutions can deliver up to 35% of the annual greenhouse gas emission cuts needed in 2050 to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees.
Solutions requiring investment suggested by the WEF include, but are not limited to: Ocean based renewable energy, reducing emissions from ocean based transport, conserving and restoring Coastal and marine ecosystems, leveraging on the ocean’s potential for carbon removal and storage.
