Twelve homes were lost in a fire that broke out in a building in Jeppestown, in Johannesburg, on Wednesday.

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services (EMS)/ firefighters were on the scene to contain the blaze.

No casualties were reported as a result of the fire.

This comes as Municipalities in Gauteng, including the City of Ekurhuleni, are cautioning residents to stay warm but safe as temperatures hit lower teens on Wednesday morning.

Several residents of the Eastern parts of the Free State shared videos of light snowfall as temperatures there hit freezing levels. 

AfriWx reported that the coldest place on Wednesday morning was Sutherland, at 1,6 degrees, followed by Vryburg (1,7), Noupoort (1,9), Upington (2) and Ficksburg at 3 degrees.

Tips shared to decrease fires:
✅ Keep heaters & candles away from anything flammable.
✅ Never leave open flames unattended.
✅ Turn off electrical appliances when not in use.
✅ Use only safe, approved plugs & wiring.
✅ Always keep a bucket of sand or water nearby — just in case!
