Two arrested with illicit cigarettes worth R7,8 million 

Two foreign nationals, aged 27 and 28, were arrested for the possession of illicit cigarettes, in the Free State, on Friday.

Police say they acted on a tip- off about the goods and proceeded to a plot in Morelig, where they found 152 boxes of illicit cigarettes, worth an estimated street value of R3.5 million.

Upon arrival, they intercepted a male near a white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with Gauteng registration plates and an adjacent storeroom.

They continued to search the vehicle, which led them to a further 180 boxes of illicit cigarettes worth R4.3 million.  

In total, the value of the seized contraband is estimated at R7.8 million. 

The suspects are expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court soon.
