A local Doctor was found dead in Margate, bringing the count of people killed by the South Coast floods to 4. The search and Rescue team found 3 people (2 adults and a child), whose car was washed off a bridge on Sunday evening.
The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, responsible for Margate, said on Sunday, that flooding started in Margate CBD, Extension 3 & 7. They also said road infrastructure was badly affected, mainly the toll road between Margate and Ramsgate as well as low-level bridges along P200.
Residents expressed shock at the unexpected heavy rains, Deybe Callin M Jordan, said he has never experienced a thunderstorm like the one yesterday, his entire life.
Thulane Mpisane, said today, Margate is finished.
Information provided by the Severe Weather and Information Center SA (SAICA), suggests a cut- off low pressure system snuck in, from 10:46- 16:46 on Sunday, leading to the development and intensification of showers, thundershowers and storms over parts of central, south-eastern and eastern SA.
This led to more intense thunderstorms with heavy downpours and damaging winds in central KZN and the eastern parts of KZN.
Active storms reported by most weather channels, around 21:45:05, last night, including AfriWx, were in Standerton, Newcastle, Bethlehem, Ladysmith, Margate,Bethlehem and Durban.
There are reports of rainfall of about 300mm in some areas of the South Coast.
Exactly two years ago, on the 17th April 2022, the worst floods hit KZN, killing 443 people.
WeatherSA has issued a Level 2 warning over central and western parts of KZN, where heavy downpours are expected and strong damaging winds for today.
Heavy rains are also expected in the North West, Free State, eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the South of Gauteng and highveld and Mpumalanga escarpment.
