The Provincial Department of Environment, in Gauteng, is encouraging compliant buy-back centres, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) upskilling, separation at source and strong community partnerships in the fight against illegal dumping.

This emerged during a recent visit to Eden Park and Thokoza, by Ewan Botha, Gauteng MEC of Environment, this week.

The Department said in an update, his visit follows concerns raised by Dino Peterson, Councillor in the City of Ekurhuleni.

Both Botha and Peterson joined local Councillor Sipho Zwane, to visit dumping sites.

Zwane said illegal dumping becomes repetitive when sites are left unsecured.

At another site, an illegally operating buy-back centre was identified and closed.

An illegal recycling facility was also shut down.

Authorities promised a shift from clean-ups to long-term, sustainable solutions.
