Waste pickers in Soweto received recycling bulk bags today.

Speaking to Earthnews365, Vhangani Munyayi, one of the organizing Councillors, said the workshop on Tuesday, took place in Meadowlands Zone 2, because it is a central venue, but waste pickers came from most parts of Soweto.

Munyayi said Petco, Producer Responsibility Organisation, donated about 300 bags.

This is not the first time such a workshop has taken place, Munyayi said the waste pickers project began in 2021.

Today’s workshop was co-organized in conjunction with other Councillors of Soweto, Bini, Mashala and Modukanene.

One of the recipients of the bags, Thabo Tabane, who is stationed at the Kwaphalo Primary, in Zone 4 Meadowlands, said the bags will be handy with his work with Ground movers.
“The event was good and opportune, but new members could not attend, due to its short notice, which is something we are hoping will be improved” Tabane said.
