The O.R. Tambo District Municipality has warned against individual construction at Mpindweni.
As a result, the Municipality is proceeding to fence off the land at Mpindweni, because it is part of a municipal servitude containing critical underground water pipelines.
The Municipality said it is aware of illegal fencing and attempts to demarcate plots there.
“Servitudes exist to ensure that municipal teams can access, repair, and maintain the infrastructure that supplies water to homes, schools, and clinics. When these areas are illegally fenced or occupied, the entire community’s access to water is placed at risk” said the Municipality.
By law, no person may fence, occupy, sell, or demarcate land without lawful authority on municipal servitudes.
The Municipality warned transgressors will face the might of the law, if they continue to set up plots and fences on the land.
It also called for the community to support this warning “allowing illegal land grabbing today, may deny our children access to water tomorrow.”
