The Winter Solstice  is on the 21st of June 2023, according to Fox Weather. “The Winter solstice (21 June 2023) which takes place today, Wednesday (16:57), is an astronomical phenomenon marking the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year for the Southern Hemisphere.”

It is characterized by the path of the Sun in the sky being farthest south in the Northern Hemisphere and farthest north in the Southern Hemisphere (June 20 or 21).  This results in the shortest day by an estimated 4 hours, 5 minutes and the longest night of the year.

During the daytime, the sun appears lowest in the sky, with the least angle to the earth, resulting in less sunlight and warmth.
