About thirteen (13) people were arrested  for illegal mining and community terrorization in the early hours of Tuesday, at the Kaserne Informal Settlement.

Police said the men were found in a shack, two (2) had unlicensed firearms and ninety-two (92) rounds of live ammunition.

Preliminary investigations suggest that they were responsible for terrorising residents of the Kaserne Informal Settlement and surrounding business districts.

They were arrested by a joint team of Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) Region F1 Operations members, the CCTV Unit, and police (SAPS) tactical teams, who acted on a credible tip-off regarding a group of heavily armed Lesotho nationals.

The suspects were detained at Jeppe SAPS and the firearms will be taken in for ballistics testing.

Patrick Jaca, JMPD’s Chief of Police Commissioner, said “this operation highlights our commitment to reclaiming our streets from illegal mining syndicates. By integrating CCTV intelligence with boots on the ground, we are ensuring that those who terrorise our communities are brought to justice.”
