A 13-year-old learner from Ngoato Tlou Secondary School, died on Friday, when a  scholar transport minibus and a truck collided on the R597, on Friday morning.

He was among other learners travelling from Ngoato Tlou High School in Sepanapudi, near Lebowakgomo, in Limpopo.

About 14 others were rushed to Polokwane Provincial Hospital for medical treatment, after sustaining injuries from the head-on collision.

Mashudu Mabata, Spokesperson of the Lepelle Nkumpi Local Municipality, said the minibus was trying to change lanes when it collided with a truck around 10am.

In other news, the funeral of 16 girls from Utumishi Girls Academy, who were killed by a fire in Kenya, got underway on Friday.

The fire also left dozens injured.

The Elimu Bora Working Group said in a statement at the time of the fire, “this tragedy is especially painful as it comes barely two years after the Hillside Endarasha Academy inferno that claimed 21 lives. We’ve not forgotten other tragedies that date back to the 90s, including the St. Kizito in 1991 and the Bombolulu Girls fire.”

Migos Ogamba, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, said in a statement, about 350 schools were closed since 2024, after the Endarasha Hillside fire.
