19 more families who were affected by floods in Durban back in 2022, were moved to temporary accommodation.
They were previously staying at a mass care centre.
Cyril Xaba, the Mayor of eThekwini went to visit them on Saturday, at Shongweni.
Xaba said the temporary units were co-funded by both provincial and national governments.
He also said plans to build permanent homes for the families are being finalised.
“This project forms part of the Municipality’s broader programme to rebuild communities affected by recurring floods. We have now finalised plans to construct permanent houses for these families on this site.”
Some 113 families were moved from temporary shelters to newly built homes in Cornubia.
“Upon completion, the project will yield 1200 units. We have also begun relocating some families from rented accommodation to the government-owned Montclair Lodge, where more than 160 families have already taken occupation” said Xaba.
