About 12 suspects were arrested in the Lejweleputswa District, for illicit mining, among other crimes.
The suspects are between the ages of 18 and 44.
They were caught with gold-bearing material (GBM), are in contravention of the Immigration Act and also had other suspected stolen property, as well as dagga.
Police said arrests were made at four different areas of the Free State- Odendaalsrus, Allanridge, Theunissen and Welkom.
Eight other people were also arrested at Selwane, Skeidech Farm, in the Lulekani policing area, for illicit mining.
They were arrested by the Phalaborwa Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI), who acted on information regarding alleged illegal mining activities at the farm and conducted a disruptive operation.
The eight were expected to appear before the Lulekani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 17 July 2026, on charges of contravening the Precious Metals Act, contravening the Immigration Act, and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
