About 289 cylinders of various sizes and brands, were confiscated by the police in Upington, in the Northern Cape, on Sunday.

The cylinders valued at R 273,260.00 were seized with the truck and trailer, by the police in the ZF Mgcawu District.

The Police said they acted on information received, of a suspect who allegedly went to collect illegaly filled gas cylinders, to sell in the ZF Mgcawu area.
It is alleged that the gas cylinders were filled at an unregistered refilling station.
The police said the gas is “substandard” and thus in contravention of the law.

“Furthermore, it was discovered that suspects used registered trademark cylinders to refill and reseal illegally.”

A 49-year-old suspect was arrested for the contravention of the Consumer Protection Act, as well as the contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act.
